What Is eMO

India Post’s Electronic Money Order Explained

The Electronic Money Order (eMO) is India Post’s digitised fund-transfer service operated by the Department of Posts (DoP). Unlike the paper-based money order that once took seven to ten days to reach the payee, an eMO moves through a centralised server in Mysore and reaches the destination post office electronically, cutting delivery time to roughly two to three business days.

Every eMO transaction is assigned a unique 18-digit tracking number at the time of booking. This number is the key to monitoring your money order from the moment it leaves the booking office until it lands in the recipient’s hands. The tariff structure mirrors that of ordinary money orders, so senders are not charged a premium for the speed advantage.

With more than 1,55,000 post offices across India connected to the eMO network, the service reaches deep into rural districts where conventional banking infrastructure remains limited. Both the remitter and the payee receive SMS alerts at key stages, providing end-to-end transparency without needing to visit a branch.

How to Track Your eMO Online

01

Locate your 18-digit eMO number

This reference number appears on the booking receipt issued at the post office counter, or in the SMS confirmation sent to the remitter’s registered mobile number at the time of booking.

02

Enter the number in the tool above

Paste or type all 18 digits into the tracking field. The system validates the format before initiating the status lookup, so double-check for any missing digits.

03

Click “Track Now” and read the status

The tool queries India Post’s official tracking database and displays the current stage: Booked, Dispatched, In Transit, Arrived at Delivery Office, or Delivered/Paid.

04

Interpret the delivery stages

A status of “Delivered” confirms the money was handed to the payee with identity verification. “Arrived at PO” means the payee must either collect from the branch or await home delivery within working hours.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my eMO tracking number shows no results?
If the tracking tool returns no data, the booking entry may not yet have synced to the central server. India Post systems can take up to 24 hours after booking to reflect status. Try again the following morning, or contact your booking post office with the receipt number.
Can the payee collect the money from a different post office?
No. eMO payment is linked to the delivery post office associated with the payee’s PIN code. The payee must either be present at home for doorstep delivery or visit the specific branch assigned by the system during working hours.
Is there a limit on how many eMOs I can send per day?
For retail customers using the counter service, there is no daily transaction cap specified, but each individual money order is capped at ₹50,000. Bulk senders registered through the Divisional Administrator may access a “One to Many” booking facility for corporate remittances.
What happens if the eMO is not delivered on the first attempt?
If the postman cannot locate the payee, the money order is marked as “Undelivered” and returned to the delivery post office. The payee is notified via SMS and has a specified number of days to collect in person before the amount is returned to the sender.
Does the eMO service work for international transfers?
The standard eMO is a domestic-only service. For international fund transfers through India Post, a separate International Money Order (IMO) system is used, currently available to France and the UAE. Tracking for IMO uses a different reference format.
