Registered Post Tracking and Delivery Help
Track a registered postal article, understand its processing events and prepare the right details when proof of posting or delivery needs to be checked.
Find the registered article number
The tracking identifier is printed on the booking receipt and may also be shared by the sender. Indian postal article numbers commonly contain two opening letters, nine digits and the ending IN. Enter the complete string without spaces. The service name on the receipt is more reliable than guessing from the envelope or contents.
How to read the tracking journey
Registered Post tracking is based on scans created as the article moves through postal operations. Booking confirms acceptance; bagging groups the article for transport; dispatch records departure; receipt records arrival at another office; and delivery events describe the final attempt.
- Enter the article number in the tracking box.
- Confirm that the booking location and date match the receipt.
- Read events from oldest to newest to follow the route.
- Use the latest office and event when contacting official support.
Common registered-mail events
| Event | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Item booked | The accepting post office created the postal record. |
| Item bagged | The article was placed with mail scheduled for the next route. |
| Item dispatched | The article left the facility named in the event. |
| Item received | The next postal unit scanned the incoming article. |
| Out for delivery | A delivery attempt is being prepared or made. |
| Delivered | The postal system recorded completion of delivery. |
| Unclaimed / insufficient address | Delivery could not be completed and action may be required. |
Proof of posting and delivery
The booking receipt is the sender’s key proof that the article entered the postal network. Keep it until delivery and any related enquiry are complete. A tracking result is useful for progress checks, but formal proof, acknowledgement services and legal requirements depend on the product purchased and official postal records.
If the document is being sent for a court, bank, employer or government process, confirm that the selected postal service satisfies that organisation’s rules. This website cannot certify legal service or ownership of a recipient signature.
When tracking stops updating
A gap can occur while mail is travelling between facilities or waiting for the next processing scan. Recheck every character, compare the latest location with the route and allow an appropriate interval. If the article is beyond the delivery estimate given at booking, the sender should use official India Post support with the original receipt.
- Do not submit personal addresses in public comments.
- Save a copy of the visible tracking timeline.
- Ask the recipient to check reception, security or household delivery.
- Use our complaint preparation guide before opening an enquiry.
Registered Post FAQs
Can I track registered mail without a receipt?
You need the assigned article number. If the receipt is unavailable, ask the sender or booking office for the relevant record.
Does “delivered” show who received the article?
Public tracking may provide only a delivery event. Request any formal delivery evidence through official channels where the purchased service supports it.
Why is my number invalid?
A letter or digit may be incorrect, the first scan may not yet be available, or the number may belong to another postal product.
Can the recipient change the delivery address here?
No. Address corrections, redirection and delivery instructions must be handled by India Post under its current rules.
