Speed Post Tracking: Check and Understand Your Shipment

Use your Speed Post article number to follow acceptance, sorting, dispatch, transit and delivery scans. This guide explains where the number appears, what common updates mean and what to check when progress pauses.

Track a Speed Post article Check number format

What you need before tracking

Keep the booking receipt or the dispatch message sent by the sender. A domestic Speed Post article normally uses a 13-character postal identifier: two opening letters, nine digits and the country code IN. Copy the complete identifier without spaces. A mistyped letter, a missing digit or confusion between zero and the letter O can return no result.

Example format: EE123456789IN. This is a format example only and is not a live consignment.

How to track Speed Post online

  1. Open the tracking box on the India Post tracking guide.
  2. Enter the complete article number exactly as printed.
  3. Select Track and review the newest event first.
  4. Compare the event time and location with the previous scan to understand the route.

Postal tracking is scan-based rather than continuous GPS tracking. The status changes when the article is accepted, processed, dispatched, received at another facility, sent for delivery or delivered.

Speed Post status meanings

StatusWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Item bookedThe article was accepted and entered into the postal network.Allow time for the first processing scan.
Item baggedThe article was grouped with mail travelling toward another facility.No action is normally required.
Item dispatchedThe article left the named office or processing centre.Wait for receipt at the next location.
Item receivedA postal facility recorded the incoming article.Check whether the location is moving closer to the destination.
Out for deliveryThe delivery office assigned the article for a delivery attempt.Keep the recipient available and the address accessible.
DeliveredA delivery event was recorded.If the recipient cannot find it, check with household or office reception before raising a query.
Door locked / addressee absentThe delivery attempt could not be completed.Watch for another attempt or contact the delivery office shown in tracking.

Wording can vary between facilities. Read the latest event together with its location and timestamp instead of relying only on one status phrase. Our tracking status guide explains additional events.

Why tracking may not update immediately

A pause does not automatically mean the article is lost. It may be travelling between facilities, waiting for the next scheduled dispatch, moving through a weekend or holiday period, or awaiting a scan at the receiving office. Newly booked articles can also take time to appear if the first electronic event has not yet been published.

  • Recheck the number against the receipt.
  • Look at the date, time and location of the last scan.
  • Allow a reasonable processing interval before checking again.
  • Keep the original receipt until delivery is confirmed.
  • Use official support if the delay is longer than the expected service window provided at booking.

Delivery attempts and address problems

Delivery can be delayed when the address is incomplete, the PIN code is incorrect, access to the premises is restricted or the recipient is unavailable. If the status mentions insufficient address, redirected, unclaimed or returned to sender, contact the appropriate India Post office promptly. Have the article number, sender and recipient details, booking date and receipt ready.

Do not publish personal addresses or identity details in public comments. Use official support channels for account-specific or delivery-specific information.

Speed Post tracking by SMS

India Post may provide SMS-based tracking instructions for supported services. SMS commands and destination numbers can change, and mobile-network charges may apply. Confirm the current command through the official India Post website before sending a message. For a full explanation, visit our India Post SMS tracking guide.

When to file a complaint

Consider an official enquiry when the article remains without a meaningful update beyond the expected delivery period, shows delivery that the recipient cannot confirm, appears to be moving in the wrong direction repeatedly, or is marked for return without a clear reason. First gather:

  • the complete Speed Post article number;
  • a readable copy of the booking receipt;
  • sender and recipient contact details;
  • the last visible tracking event and its date;
  • a brief description of the issue.

Follow the steps in our India Post complaint guide. Formal investigation and compensation decisions can only be handled by India Post.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track Speed Post without the article number?

Public tracking normally requires the assigned article number. Ask the sender for the receipt or dispatch confirmation if you do not have it.

Is Speed Post tracking live GPS?

No. The timeline is based on operational scans recorded at postal facilities and during delivery processing.

Why does my number show no record?

The number may be mistyped, the first scan may not yet be available, or the identifier may belong to a different service. Verify every character and try again later.

What should I do if tracking says delivered?

Check with the recipient, family members, security desk or office reception. If the article is still missing, contact official India Post support with the receipt and tracking details.

Can the delivery date be guaranteed from tracking?

No. Tracking shows recorded progress, while delivery timing can be affected by route, destination, operational conditions and address issues.
