The common 13-character structure
Many internationally standardised postal article identifiers contain two opening letters, nine digits and a two-letter country code. Articles originating in India commonly end in IN. The opening letters can help postal systems identify the product or handling category, but the booking receipt remains the best source for the exact service.

Service or article-category prefix used by postal systems.

Two closing letters identifying the issuing postal administration.
All characters must remain in the original order.
Frequent entry mistakes
- Entering an online-store order number instead of the postal number.
- Leaving spaces or adding a hyphen copied from a formatted message.
- Confusing zero with O, one with I, or five with S.
- Omitting the two closing country-code letters.
- Using a passport application, complaint or money-order reference.
Copy from the receipt when possible, then visually compare the first two and final two letters.
Different references serve different purposes
An article number follows a physical postal item. An order number belongs to a seller, an application number belongs to the issuing authority, and a complaint number identifies a support case.
