EMS Express Mail Service Deep Explained

What is EMS International Tracking
and How Does India Post EMS Work?

EMS Express Mail Service is the world’s largest international express postal network, governed by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) since 1999. India Post EMS connects senders across India to recipients in 190+ countries, offering faster delivery than standard international post with end-to-end tracking, customs handling, and door delivery.

🌐

EMS A Global Postal Network

EMS is operated by the EMS Cooperative, a body under the Universal Postal Union, connecting 170+ member states. India Post joined the EMS Cooperative in 1999. Member postal organizations collectively handle over 8 million EMS packages every week. Unlike private couriers, EMS uses each destination country’s own postal system for last-mile delivery making it accessible to addresses unreachable by DHL or FedEx.

📬

India Post EMS What You Can Send

India Post EMS accepts documents, commercial samples, and merchandise for international express delivery. Packages can be booked at departmental post offices across India, with late booking available in metro and major cities. EMS articles are time-bound and include a money-back guarantee if delivery SLAs are missed. Insurance and customs declaration are included at booking.

📦

ITPS International Tracked Packet Service

Since January 2026, India Post expanded its International Tracked Packet Service (ITPS) to 50 additional countries. ITPS is a lighter, more economical tracked option for small packets and e-commerce shipments. Weight limits to the USA were increased from 2 kg to 5 kg. ITPS also offers end-to-end tracking via the India Post system, making it ideal for small business exporters.

How EMS Moves After Leaving India

After booking, your EMS parcel travels from the origin post office to the Foreign Post Office (FPO), then to the air cargo facility. A scan event “Send Receptacle Abroad (OTB)” or “Aircraft Take Off” confirms it has departed. The parcel then arrives at the destination country’s exchange office, clears customs, and is handed to the local postal carrier for final delivery. The same EM-prefix number is valid throughout this entire international journey.

Why EMS Tracking Goes Silent During International Transit Explained

A gap of 24–72 hours without a new scan is completely normal for EMS international shipments. This happens during airline carriage: your parcel is physically inside a sealed dispatch bag on an aircraft and is not scanned individually mid-flight. The next scan typically appears when the bag arrives at the destination country’s exchange office or customs facility. The scan event “Send Receptacle Abroad (OTB)” or “Aircraft Take Off” confirms your parcel has departed India the next update comes from the destination side. If no update appears after 72 hours post-OTB, check the destination country’s postal tracker using the same number.

EMS Customs Clearance What Every Sender Needs to Know

Customs Declaration (CN22 / CN23)

Restricted & Prohibited Items

India Post maintains a list of prohibited items for international EMS including lithium batteries above certain thresholds, liquids, perishables, and hazardous goods. Verify both India Post’s outbound restrictions and the destination country’s import restrictions before booking.
