ITPS also offers end-to-end tracking via the India Post system, making it ideal for small business exporters.
How EMS Moves After Leaving India
After booking, your EMS parcel travels from the origin post office to the Foreign Post Office (FPO), then to the air cargo facility. A scan event “Send Receptacle Abroad (OTB)” or “Aircraft Take Off” confirms it has departed. The parcel then arrives at the destination country’s exchange office, clears customs, and is handed to the local postal carrier for final delivery. January 2026 Update: ITPS Expands to 50 New Countries
India Post’s International Tracked Packet Service (ITPS) now covers 50 additional countries as of January 2026, bringing the total to over 100 destinations. The maximum weight limit for ITPS shipments to the United States has been increased from 2 kg to 5 kg a major boost for Indian e-commerce exporters selling on platforms like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy. ITPS provides end-to-end tracking at a lower price point than EMS, making it the recommended choice for small parcel exports under 5 kg.

Why EMS Tracking Goes Silent During International Transit Explained
A gap of 24–72 hours without a new scan is completely normal for EMS international shipments. This happens during airline carriage: your parcel is physically inside a sealed dispatch bag on an aircraft and is not scanned individually mid-flight. The next scan typically appears when the bag arrives at the destination country’s exchange office or customs facility. The scan event “Send Receptacle Abroad (OTB)” or “Aircraft Take Off” confirms your parcel has departed India the next update comes from the destination side. If no update appears after 72 hours post-OTB, check the destination country’s postal tracker using the same number.

Your parcel has reached the Foreign Post Office (FPO) the India Post international gateway, typically in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, or Kolkata. Customs export formalities are completed here.
Your EMS parcel has physically departed India inside a sealed dispatch bag on an outbound aircraft. This is the last India-side scan. A 24–72 hour gap in updates is completely normal the parcel is in the air.
The parcel has landed in the destination country and is at the international exchange office of the recipient country’s postal service. Customs inspection is initiated at this point.
The destination country’s customs authority is inspecting your parcel. Duty may be assessed. This is standard for international shipments and does not mean there is a problem.

Customs Declaration (CN22 / CN23)
All EMS international shipments require a customs declaration form CN22 for items under ₹10,000 value and CN23 for higher-value shipments. Accurate declarations reduce the risk of customs holds, delays, and penalties at the destination country.
Import Duty at Destination
Each country sets its own import duty thresholds. Shipments above the de minimis value may attract customs duty payable by the recipient. This is collected by the destination country’s postal service it is not an India Post fee. The sender cannot pay it in advance.
