Application & Verification at PSK/POPSK
You apply at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). Biometrics and document verification happen here. The file is sent to the Regional Passport Office (RPO) for granting.
Police Verification
Local police verify your address and identity this is the most time-consuming step, typically taking 5–14 days. For re-issue applications with a clean record, post-issuance verification may apply, reducing wait time.
Passport Printed & Granted
After successful police verification, the Regional Passport Office (RPO) grants your passport and sends it to the printing facility. Passports are printed on security paper with biometric chips for e-Passports.

452 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) March 2026 Update
As of March 2026, the Ministry of Communications confirmed that 452 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) are operational across India including 65 Aspirational Districts. Confirmed in a parliamentary reply tabled on 12 March 2026 by Minister of State Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, this joint initiative between the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Department of Posts transforms select Head Post Offices into full biometric and document verification hubs. POPSKs use the same MEA software and biometric systems as standard PSKs, with no difference in fees or processing quality just far greater geographic reach for citizens in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Once your passport is handed to India Post, you receive an SMS on your Passport Seva-registered mobile number. The SMS contains your passport number and the PP-prefix Speed Post consignment number. Transit Scans Typically 3–7 Working Days
Your passport moves through India Post’s Speed Post network. Expect multiple scan updates Item Accepted, In Transit, Arrived at Sorting Hub, Dispatched to Delivery PO. A 24–48 hour gap between scans during inter-city transit is normal.
Out for Delivery Be Home and Ready
When tracking shows “Out for Delivery,” the postman has your passport on their route for that day. Keep your original photo ID ready. If you are absent, the postman will leave a notice and return the next business day. After 2–3 failed attempts, the passport is held at the post office for 30 days before being returned to the RPO.
Delivered Verify Your Passport Immediately
Once delivered, verify all details on your passport name, date of birth, address, validity dates, and photo. Report any discrepancies to the nearest Passport Seva Kendra immediately. The passport is a government-issued security document do not write on it or damage it.

The most common source. After your passport is dispatched, India Post sends an SMS to your registered mobile number in the format: “Passport No. XXXXXXXX dispatched on DD/MM/YYYY and can be tracked using Speed Post Tracking No. PP123456789IN -PassportSP”. The PP number is in this SMS.
Passport Seva Portal
Log in at passportindia.gov.in with your registered credentials. Go to “Track Application Status” and enter your 15-digit Application Reference Number (ARN) and date of birth. Once your passport is dispatched, the Speed Post tracking number will appear in the status page.
Email from Passport Office
If you registered with an email address on passportindia.gov.in, you may receive a dispatch email containing the PP tracking number. Check your spam/junk folder if the email is not in your inbox. The email is sent from the official Passport Seva system.

Your passport has been sealed and handed to India Post Speed Post by the Passport Seva Kendra or Regional Passport Office. You should receive a PP tracking number via SMS on your registered mobile number at this point.
India Post has officially registered your passport consignment at the origin post office. The PP number is now live in the tracking system and you can begin monitoring scan updates in real time.
Your passport is being transported between post offices or sorting facilities. A gap of 24–48 hours without a new scan is completely normal during inter-city transit the parcel moves by road or rail between scans.
Your passport has reached the post office responsible for delivering to your registered address. This is the penultimate step delivery to your address is typically 1–2 business days away from this scan.
The postman has your passport and it is on their delivery route for today. Delivery is expected the same day. Passports require the recipient to be present and provide photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, or Driving Licence) for handover.
Your passport has been physically handed over to you or an authorized family member at your registered address. Immediately verify all printed details name, date of birth, address, validity, and photograph for any printing errors.
The postman visited but you were not present or could not produce valid ID for verification. A notice will be left at your door. Passports require the addressee to be present they cannot be handed to neighbours or left unattended.
After multiple failed delivery attempts or 30 days unclaimed at the post office, your passport is returned to the issuing Regional Passport Office (RPO). You will need to contact the RPO to re-apply for dispatch there is no automatic re-delivery.

What to Do If Your Passport Has Not Been Delivered
If your PP tracking shows no update for 5+ working days after dispatch, or delivery is confirmed but you haven’t received your passport, take these steps in order:

The postman is required to: confirm the recipient is the named passport holder or an authorized family member, check a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Driving Licence, or PAN Card), and collect a signature on the delivery acknowledgement. Passports will not be left with neighbours, building staff, or without ID verification.
