What is an India Post consignment number?
A consignment number identifies a trackable postal item. Depending on the booked service, the item may be a Speed Post document, registered article, parcel or international shipment. The identifier belongs to the postal shipment—not to the payment, invoice or online-shopping order.

How to read the tracking timeline

Why no tracking result appears
A “not found” result can happen when the number is mistyped, the booking is very recent, the sender supplied an order ID, or the selected postal service does not provide the expected public scan history.
- Re-enter the number directly from the receipt.
- Confirm that the sender handed the physical item to India Post.
- Wait for the first acceptance or processing event.
- Verify the result through the official India Post tracking service.
Do not pay an unofficial account to “activate” a tracking number. Never share an OTP, banking information or identity document for a routine tracking check.
When a consignment stops moving
Online tracking records postal events, not live GPS movement. The item may be travelling between two facilities while the public timeline remains unchanged. Weekends, holidays, long-distance transport and international handovers can create longer gaps.
First response
Save the latest event, timestamp and location. Compare it with the destination and booking date.
Escalation
If the shipment exceeds the estimate provided at booking, keep the receipt and contact India Post using official support.

Delivery attempts and returned consignments
A delivery attempt may fail because the address cannot be located, the premises are closed, the recipient is unavailable or additional handling is required. Read the exact status rather than assuming the item will automatically be attempted again.
If the timeline mentions return movement, contact the sender and delivery office promptly. The sender’s receipt remains important because it proves the booked service and consignment details.
Domestic and international tracking

Is the consignment number the same as an order number?
No. An order number belongs to a shop or marketplace. The postal consignment number retrieves India Post scan events.
Can I track a consignment by phone number?
The public tracking search normally requires the postal article or consignment number rather than the sender’s or recipient’s phone number.
Does dispatched mean delivery today?
No. It means the item left the facility named in that event. Look for “out for delivery” for a local delivery round.
