India Post Tracking Status Meanings Explained
Read each scan as part of a timeline. The event name, office, date and previous update together explain where an article is in the postal process.
Movement statuses
The accepting office created the article record.
The article was grouped with mail for the next route.
The article left the office named in the event.
Another facility recorded the incoming article.
Dispatch does not mean delivery, and receipt does not mean the recipient received it. These are facility-to-facility movements.
Delivery statuses
The destination office prepared a delivery attempt.
The system recorded completion of delivery.
The recipient was unavailable when delivery was attempted.
Access was unavailable at the delivery address.
Address and return exceptions
Events such as insufficient address, redirected, unclaimed, refused or return to sender require closer attention. Check the full address and PIN code, contact the relevant delivery office through official channels and keep the booking receipt. A return scan usually means the article has started moving back; it does not necessarily mean it has already reached the sender.
International and customs events
“Office of exchange” refers to an international mail facility. Presentation to customs means border assessment has begun; it does not confirm a charge or release. After arrival abroad, the destination postal operator may show newer events using the same article number. Read our EMS guide for international handovers.
When a status looks stuck
- Check the last event’s exact time and office.
- Compare it with the previous scan.
- Allow for transport intervals, weekends and holidays.
- Confirm the number against the receipt.

Status FAQs
Is tracking continuous GPS?
No. Updates appear when postal operations create a scan.
Does delivered always name the recipient?
Public tracking may only show the delivery event. Formal evidence must be requested through official channels where available.
Why did my article move to another city?
Sorting hubs can create routes that look indirect. The next scan usually clarifies onward movement.
